on Earth can you afford to have six kids? question has been asked of me so often I wish I had a nickel for each time someone scratched their head in wonder. I have a fat bank account by now. The fact of the matter is, we can afford to have a large family by society standard, anyway. Regardless of how much you your life, stuff happens. I never planned on having a large family, but that what I have. Fact is, it too late to send back any of these kids I been blessed with, so I have to make the best of it. 1. Make your kids share a bedroom. There is no family rule book that says kids are entitled to their own bedroom. We live in a 1400 square foot home with an added sun room. It not exactly palatial but it cozy, clean and it home. Our daughters share a bedroom and all four of our sons have taken over the large sun room. I like to think I fostering sibling relations by making them share a room. Think of all the funny memories they have when they are older. 2. It not pretty to look at, nor does it have all the bells and whistles of a new car. It does, however, fit us all and it gets us from point A to point B. And it paid off. Don get me wrong love to drive a vehicle with windows that roll down, a/c that actually blows cool air, as well as functional door handles (any handle or knob in a large family is at risk for abuse, just saying). But for now, this works for us. 3. Cooking at home is much healthier, too don like the idea of my kids eating from the dollar menu night after night. I not averse to the occasional taco night or five dollar pizza, but we don make it a habit. It not fun to cook day in and day out (especially in the middle of summer), but with the money it saves us a wise choice. 4. Find a friend with one or two children and then stalk them for hand me downs. We don have the luxury of walking into a department store and buying clothes off the rack with a credit card. Just buying each child a new pair of jeans and a pair of sneakers can be a hardship for us. Hand me downs are awesome sibling to sibling and from friends who donate. 5. Become a hardcore diy Embrace a do it yourself attitude. Steam clean your own sofa. Paint your own walls. Fix your own plumbing. Refinish that furniture. Install that new ceiling fan. Sew those cute curtains. The diy attitude is a necessity when you have a large family, but it feels good to know you have the knowledge and motivation to take care of your own home. 6. Plan your vacation around a tent, not a hotel room. We take our kids camping every year and they love it. I discovered that swimming in the ocean, hiking and sitting around a campfire is a much more fulfilling experience for us as a family than visiting an amusement park, shopping or going on a cruise. I think most of these tips are useful for any family, regardless of size. For us, though, it a necessity. Image source: My family, including my 19 year old stepson. This is going to sound harsh but I have to say it. These tips are exactly why we opted for a smaller family. Would I have liked to have more? yes. But I feel it is important to pick a ratio for your financial footing that allows you to provide well. I want to go out to eat without thinking about how many weeks in groceries that is, I want my kids to have jeans when they need them (not that I opposed to hand me downs, just don want to survive by them). Now I do like the idea of sharing a room because it is great for bonding, and I like the idea of camping (although it not for me, not outdoorsy AT ALL!) and not having the best new car when you don need it. I like teaching kids not to be materialistic, but i prefer it to be more in practice than in necessity, if you get what I mean. Good for you because you are happy, but I personally wouldn strain my family this hard. I have to agree with the PP. Limiting your family size will help save money more than anything else. You wouldn buy a $3,000 handbag if you could only afford a $30 one, why have ten kids if you can only afford two. It 100% the same thing and unless your religion forbids birth control there really isn an excuse. That aside, saving electricity is a big one for me. I have energy efficient appliances, florescent lightbulbs, we rarely use the dishwasher, basically everything we can to save on energy but we still pay $250 300 a month. So right now we trying to get solar panels approved by the HOA (and things are looking good!). If you can afford to put them in they save you so much in the long run. The only other thing would be house size. Just because the bank approves you for X amount doesn mean you have to spend that. Scale back your expectations and reap the rewards. My husbands colleagues are all in houses that cost twice as much as ours. We could have bought a big fancy house too, but I like knowing ours will be paid off in less than five years from now. families can be this strapped w just one child. Handme downs and used clothes, yep I had them when I was young and I was an only child. And to be honest w each kid I have had, 4 total, I have come to realize that they will outgrow the clothes quickly, they will play in them in the mud/grass and I would rather spend money on other things than designer department store clothes. And again same with diy. why pay a plumber your hard earned money if you can make a simple repair yourself. I think these are not only ideas for large families but for everyday living in the current economy and financial struggles of a very large number of families living pay check to paycheck, w no kids to large families. I really enjoyed this article. All your hard work and sacrafice will pay off. I am the 4th of 5 kids. My dad worked and mom stayed home. My parents helped provide us with a used car, books, and some gas money for college and we all managed to graduate. We worked hard for our education and I feel that it has given us more appreciation for it. Yeah we had loans, but also had the ability to repay them thanks to our professions. Also, I never stepped foot in a McDonalds until I went with friends in high school, and I think thats why I don care much for it. I grew up eating home cooked meals everyday and never felt like I missed out on anything. My thought on this sort of thing has always been, your children would rather all exist and live modestly than have only one or two of them exist and live better. You not starving, you making it work, and you know what? Nice things aren as important as nice people. I only have 2 so far but I hoping for another one or two. We live very modestly already homemade clothing, we never eat out, we rarely buy prepared foods (my children think purchased bread is a treat stuff is $3 a loaf! on /sale/!), and we eat a lot of lentils with rice (which we very fortunately enjoy). When things loosen up a bit, I want to add to the family. We still live modestly, there just be more of us. Some of the comments on this post are harsh I know a woman who was told she could never have kids that now has 4 she got pregnant while on nearly every form of birth control. And I got pregnant with my first while on the pill and its not like I some bimbo who can use it properl, sometimes things happen. That being said I only have one kid and we do a lot to save money I constantly couponing it tough when you live in SoCal but it can be done. I always buy a newspaper or 2 and check the ads for sales. We only turn the a/c for a few hours and then use the cooler instead it runs off of ice so it much cheaper. I loved reading your tips, and I think no matter what your family size there is benefit to adopting these principles. I think its so sad to hear people limited the number of children they had so they could go out to eat on a whim. Yes, if you can afford to feed your kids or provide a clean home, that different. But that not the case. Denise I love reading about your big family, and I sometimes find myself envious of how many kids you have. I have 2 daughters and have recently thought a lot about having a 3rd. I told myself (and my hubby) though that I would never let financial reasons keep me from having the family and life I want. Because I know a tropical vacation, brand new car or a year out at the fanciest restaurants would NEVER replace the joy, love, peace, comfort I get from my children. If my parents would have waited to have children until they could them by today standards, they would not have had most, if not all, of the five children they had. 314254 003 Air Jordan 4 Oreo Black Black Cool Grey ,528895 033 Air Jordan 11 Retro Low Green Snakeskin Black Nightshade White Volt Women Size 616750 001 Nike Air Foamposite Pro Yeezy 136064 004 Men Size Air Jordan 3 Retro Wolf Grey Nike Air Foamposite Onered Supreme 378037 117 Womens Air Jordan 11 Legend Blue White Black Legend Blue Air Jordan Spizike New York Knicks Blue Air Jordan 12 Low Black Patent Black Varsity Red 314254 003 Air Jordan 4 Oreo Black Black Cool Grey 378037 117 Air Jordan 11 Legend Blue White Black Legend Blue Glendale, Arizona and Peoria, Arizona are just a short drive away from our Youngtown hotel. It seemed as though everything was either pastels or Pooh. Today, crib bedding comes in so many styles and colors and palettes, I often find myself saying, they have that in my size? The hardest part about rounding up this list of 7 bedding collections was narrowing it down. And it funny a house full of girls, I find myself getting exceedingly excited over the cool boy bedding options out there. Despite the recommendation that you no longer use crib bumpers in your baby bed, most shops are still making them available to consumers. And I have to wonder if they will eventually phase out, or if it is a recommendation most people ignore? But I am beginning to see more and more options like breathable crib bumpers and bumpers that wrap individually around each spoke of the crib, becoming more readily available. I strongly believe bumpers should not be sold. Sure they look cute, but if they pose a risk of death to your baby why would you use them? Some states are proposing banning the sale of bumpers. I think the only reason they still around is infant bedding sales make companies too much money so they don want to stop despite numerous sources saying they should not be used. As soon as my daughter started rolling and scooting around she would get her leg stuck in between the crib spokes up to her hip and wrench her leg trying to roll away and get her leg out. I was afraid she was going to break something, the problem with the bumpers is that if you press your face into them you can breath or the baby may be able to pull it off and get it wrapped around them and cause strangulation or even accidentally cut off blood flow to a body part. So long as you knot the bumper instead of trying to make pretty bows and use a breathable bumper and remember to take the bumper off as soon as the baby starts trying to stand I think bumpers are fine. Its the parents that need to research, watch their kids, and be responsible in making the decisions. I am a huge fan of the new ventilated crib bumpers offered by Oliver B. They allow for 100% airflow throughout the crib, they are adorable on the crib as well as being a very affordable option. Another concern that these bumpers offer is that they are soft enough that your baby cannot use them as a stepping stone to crawl out of the crib. For those of you that have totally removed your bumpers, you know how often your child gets their arms and legs stuck in between the crib slats. These ventilated bumpers really reduce the change of this happening. This Internet site provides information of a general nature and is designed for educational purposes only. Big Size 314254 003 Air Jordan 4 Oreo Black Black Cool Grey,656503 720 Air Jordan Future Volt White A heel is a very easy way to dress up a sandal. If you are looking to wear sandals at work or for a night out on the town, you don't want to grab a pair of beach flip flops for your tootsies. No way it's time to break out the big guns, or as this season's designers would have it, a whimsical and architectural heel that is sure to impress. Before you start groaning, consider this heels can be comfortable. That's right. If you get a wedge heel or a thicker heel, you'll barely notice that your feet are somewhat elevated. Besides, isn't feeling sexy comfortable for most of us? If you are wondering where to find the more showy heels of the season, you'll have to look at a higher end sandal. Besides, you want to make sure that such a lofty perch is built well and will endure the test of the first sidewalk crack it gets stuck in! If it is a night out on the town and some dancing that you are looking for, make sure to stick to something with a thicker heel as it isn't good for your feet to be using killer dance moves on thin heels. Save these for the dinners out and the patio after. If you plan to be popping up a storm in your sandals, make sure that they have a back strap to hold them in place. If you are looking to pick up a higher end sandal and can't quite afford the $600 $800 range of the top name brands, don't fret! Shoes may not all be created equal, but sandals are much harder to create differently from one another. For this reason, a sandal costing $75 to $200 isn't really going to be that much different from the extremely high end ones we're willing to bet you can't even figure out the difference between the two if they are put side by side with labels ripped off. Besides, who exactly is going to see the label that your soles are covering up? Exactly; nobody is going to know the difference! Getting back to the architectural heel. What exactly does this mean? It means a heel with cutouts, a heel with stature a heel that looks like the Guggenheim rather than the Met. A heel that looks designed. Sandals have become the hot item rather than handbags, and its all about the heel on the sandal when it comes to the dressup and salivation factor. The more structured, the better. If you can't possibly envisage a heel on your sandal, there is hope for you. There are gladiator sandals with strappy good looks, and flat sandals with embellishments that will have you tiptoeing through the tulips just to pick a pair off the proverbial vine. While structured heels may be the it thing, those of you with heelphobia are not completely lost in this season's landscape. 314254 003 Air Jordan 4 Oreo Black Black Cool Grey Regardless of your hair length or texture, Girl in Motion Headbands offers a stylish fabric band to keep the sweat and hair out of your eyes while you exercise. For years, your faithful Philadelphia Cycling Examiner has cut the arms off tee shirts acquired at races (from swag to rag) and used them for headbands. Practical, yes; but a huge glamor don't. Having acquired a Girl in Motion Headband I've discovered the joy of stylish hair restraint. The elastic band that joins the funky fabric in the back holds the band snugly but comfortably in place. Unlike the tee shirt method which eventually gives all over, the GIM band retains its hold after a 3 hour bike ride. They are machine washable which is desirable because they absorb sweat quite well. Although not the most absorbant option, they are effective at keeping sweat out of eyes. The bands come in a variety of widths and absolutely adorable fabrics. Find one that matches your favorite cycling wear or team kit, and head on out for a ride. Indeed, teams could consider these bands as a "must have" in addition to matching water bottles, shoe covers, and gloves. Just a thought, Sturdy Girl Cycling. The bands are also chic accessories during yoga workouts, or any of the other alternate endeavors sought when outdoor riding is impossible. Or simply to wear for work or play. Keep your hair out of the way, and check out one of these beautiful and reasonably price hair bands.
